The Character (as played by Sarah)
Carly moved to Port Charles in 1996 to attempt to disrupt her biological mother’s life to get back at her for abandoning her as a baby. At the time, Bobbie, her mother was unaware that Carly was her daughter. Bobbie believed her daughter to be dead. Only her brother Luke and Carly knew the truth.
Carly started having a sexual relationship with Jason, which was ended as soon as Jason discovered his feelings for Robin. Carly then started an affair with Bobbie’s husband Tony, in hopes of destroying her mother’s life. After Tony’s fling with Carly was found out, Bobbie and Tony divorced, and Tony moved in with Carly. Bobbie was trapped in a fire and Tony rescued her, much to Carly’s dismay, and when they began to grow close, Carly mailed Bobbie the custody papers (for Lucas) that Tony had decided not to use. This tore Tony and Bobbie apart. Carly’s little plot was soon discovered, and Tony and Carly had a huge fight.
Carly, believing that she and Tony were through, went to Jake’s (a local dive bar above which Jason lived) to find Jason. While she was waiting for Jason to return, she got drunk with A.J. (not knowing he was Jason’s brother) and they went upstairs to Jason’s room and made love. When she returned home, she found Tony waiting and they kissed and made up. Carly then found out she was pregnant, but she did not know who the baby’s father was.
Tony unaware of her fling with A.J., assumed the baby was his, and Carly set out to ruin A.J. so that he would stop trying to remember the night they spent at Jake’s. Tony proposed to Carly (mostly because of the baby, although he says not) and Carly accepted. However, in the heat of an argument, Carly admitted the baby was not his. Around this same time, Carly told Bobbie that she was the child Bobbie had given up for adoption years ago. These two bombshells caused Tony and Carly to split, and Carly moved in with Jason.
The two agreed to tell everyone that the baby was theirs, but in reality, it was AJ and Carly’s. Shortly after Michael was born, Tony kidnapped him because he considered Carly and Jason unfit parents. Tony had the cunning Alexis Davis as his lawyer, and she got him off with nothing but community service. This outraged Carly, so she shot Tony in open court. Carly was committed to a mental hospital for further evaluation.
With Jason’s help Carly got released from the mental hospital, but not before Robin returned and both Jason and Michael had moved into her cottage. Carly moved into the cottage temporally, so that Michael could get used to her again. Robin and Carly did not get along. Eventually, Robin decided that she had enough and she returned to Paris, but not before telling AJ that he was Michael’s father. A desperate Carly came up with a plan to keep Michael. She went to the Quartermaine’s and told them that Jason had kidnapped Michael, when in fact she had made plans with Jason to leave the country with Jason and Michael. Carly moved in to the Quartermaine mansion, and married AJ. After seeing Jason dance with Liz Webber, Carly had a one night stand with Sonny Corinthos. Jason found her and Sonny the next day and ended up leaving town. Carly was mortified to find out she was pregnant with Sonny’s child. Sonny soon learned the truth and called her on it, in front of all the Quartermaines. AJ was furious and demanded that Carly stay in the mansion under house arrest. Jason called Sonny and gave him evidence that AJ had hired an arsonist to set Jason and Sonny’s coffee warehouse on fire in 1999 and Sonny used that information to blackmail AJ into signing over all rights to Michael and allowing Carly to leave. Carly reluctantly moved into Sonny’s penthouse and the two shared a seemingly tumultuous relationship.
One night when Carly was at the Quartermaine mansion to visit with Lila, she and AJ had an encounter on the stairs. AJ had just come home drunk, and the two began to fight. Carly then lost her balance and feel backwards onto the floor of the foyer. She was rushed to the hospital, where the doctors told Sonny that she was very seriously hurt. If the baby was not aborted, Carly would die. So, after saying goodbye to what he later found out to be his son, Sonny authorized the abortion. When she woke up after the operation, Carly did not remember what had happened and she was confused as to where the baby had gone. Sonny explained to her what had occurred, and she fell into a temporary state of depression. Sonny then took Carly and Michael to his private island in Puerto Rico so that she could recover from losing the baby.
A while after they returned home, Sonny’s father Mike got into trouble with some loan sharks who happened to be working for Sonny’s archenemy, Joseph Sorel. Carly, thinking that she would be helping Sonny, arranged it so that a meeting between Sorel and Mike in a motel room would be recorded and busted in on by the cops so that Sorel would get arrested. However, at the last minute, Sonny found out about the meeting, and furious at Mike, decided to go meet with Sorel himself to straighten things out. Carly was not aware of this change, and continued everything as planned. She hid in the closet in the motel room dressed as a hooker, and waited for Mike and Sorel to show up. Sonny came instead, and when the cops showed up, she was discovered in the closet. Since Carly was the only witness, she would be forced to testify against Sonny and would probably send him to prison. Alexis Davis, his lawyer, said that the only way she could get out of this would be to marry Sonny since spouses can’t be forced to incriminate each other. Although enraged at Carly for what she had done, Sonny agreed to marry her if it would keep him out of jail.
They were married by a justice of the peace in Sonny’s penthouse with Alexis and Jason as witnesses. After many fights and rough spots, Carly and Sonny eventually realized that they liked each other and decided to remain married and give each other a chance. Although they were falling in love, neither of them would admit it. Later on, Sonny and Alexis helped release a young man named Zander Smith from prison. Zander, who was also Emily Quartermaine’s boyfriend, had been framed for murder after working for Sorel, and his testimony would put Sorel in prison, so Sonny decided to help him. On the night that Zander was released, Sonny, Alexis, Zander, and Emily were walking down the steps of the PCPD, when two gunmen dressed as police officers fired at them. Sonny was wounded badly, and before he went unconscious, he told Alexis to tell Carly that he loved her.
After receiving Sonny’s message, Carly was more determined than ever that Sonny would be okay. When his heart stopped beating, she forced the doctors to shock him one more time, and he lived. Sonny told her that he came back for her and she admitted that she loved him too. Then as a surprise, Sonny proposed to Carly and told her that he wanted to retake their vows in front of God in a chapel on Martinique. Everything was going well until Sonny was almost killed again. This time in a warehouse fire caused by Sorel. Sonny realized that by being married to him, Carly would only be in danger. He tried to break off the marriage, but Carly wouldn’t hear it, and flew to Martinique. Sonny followed her with the intention of hurting her so that she would hate him, but Carly saw right through his plan and made him realize that they should be together and the couple renewed their wedding vows.
After Carly again betrayed Sonny, this time by attempting to get him into the Witness Protection Program, Sonny broke it off with his wife. When Sorel held Carly and Alexis hostage in the Corinthos penthouse, Zander tried to rescue them but was shot by Sorel instead. Sonny came in wearing a bomb. Sorel was injured severely when the bomb went off but Sonny was okay. Sorel later was murdered by his daughter, Angel Ellis, at General Hospital. Everyone survived the bomb blast with minor injuries. Taggert, who was on the scene, suffered a temporary hearing loss.
