A Closer Look: Sarah Brown
Sonny finds Claudia in the rubble after the warehouse explosion this week but rejects her again. Nevertheless, she’s adamant about not going to war with her mobster ex. Sarah Brown reflects on Port Charles’ mafia princess and her twisted antics.
Weekly: Was the prospect of playing this tough-as-nails mob chick what lured you back?
Brown: Oh yeah. I’ve always been a big Sopranos fan. They had one woman in particular who ran the mob for her father when he was ailing. The actress (Sofia Milos, who played Annalisa) was dynamite, and I bought it hook, line, and sinker. Normally, those roles are played by men, but I wanted to try it. I’ve always been interested in the idea of playing that.
Weekly: So does Sonny literally step of Claudia’s body once he finds her on the docks?
Brown: No. Sonny actually digs her out of a pile of rubble, thinking she’s Carly. Once Sonny pulls Claudia out and realizes it’s her, he takes off. They have a little back-and-forth that’s pretty catty (laughs). A small exchange.
Weekly: Is Claudia ticked off by her ex-lover’s treatment?
Brown: The complex thing about Claudia is that things aren’t what they seem. Her ploys for Sonny and Jason are really calculated and parts of a master plan. They’re not rooted in a place for need or love, just “I need to work you. I need to manipulate you.”
Weekly: How does Claudia end up getting out of there?
Brown: Sonny tells her that her brother is still alive. Claudia goes looking for him in the mess. She’s desperate to get to Johnny and make sure he’s okay. Eventually, they find each other and there’s that titanic moment of “Oh my god! You’re alive.” There’s a lot of emotion. Then, they’re like, “Let’s get out of here, now.”
Weekly: Later, Sonny visits Claudia at the hospital. How does that encounter go?
Brown: Claudia’s sustained some injuries and is hooked up to morphine. I guess it’s payback for what Claudia did to Kate. Sonny’s doing the same thing to Claudia, nailing her while she’s laid up in a hospital bed. Johnny comes in, sees Sonny, and is out for blood. He wants to kill the man. He’s irate. He whips out a gun, and pistol-whips Sonny. There’s a bunch of nastiness that goes on. Ultimately, Sonny takes off.
Weekly: What does Claudia think of Johnny’s actions?
Brown: She wants her brother to stand up for her. She’s excited and happy. They’re twisted, these two. Claudia and Johnny’s minds are along the lines of, “Are you going to honor me, be part of my family, and stand up for me?”
Weekly: Yet Claudia doesn’t want and out-and-out mob war with Sonny. What steps does she take to prevent that?
Brown: After Claudia learns that Johnny pulled Michael out of the rubble from the explosion2, she goes to see Carly. She’s like, “Let’s be reasonable here. My brother saved your son’s life. Meanwhile, Sonny kidnapped my brother, beat him, and locked him in a room, claiming we had Michael. Well, we didn’t. Johnny saved Michael, and you owe us. So go talk to Sonny, and tell him to back off.”
Weekly: Of course, interrupts their chat. Does Claudia appeal to him for peace, too?
Brown: Yes, Claudia recounts what she just said to Carly and tells Jason, “We don’t want a war. Push us, and that’s what you’re going to get.” She tells Jason to deliver the message to his boss. Neither of them wants revenge. They don’t want to waste their time doing that. Claudia thinks that she can convince Johnny and is hopeful that Jason has that kind of influence over Sonny.
