Yes, Sarah Brown is returning to GENERAL HOSPITAL in 2008–but no, not as Carly. Laura Wright, who took over the pivotal role in November 2005 is not going anywhere when Carly’s originator comes home, as Brown will assume a new, as-yet undisclosed character. Brown originated the love-to-hate spitfire in 1996 and played her until 2001, winning three Emmys for her work. Tamara Braun took over from 2001-2005. Jennifer Bransford (ex-Georgie, OLTL) stepped in for six months afterward, only to be replaced by Wright later that year.

“She is my definitive Carly and I have to tell you, I’m a little intimidated,” chuckles Wright on Brown. “My biggest fear is she doesn’t like what I do with the character. I hope I haven’t disappointed her. I can see it now — the first scene I shoot with her I’m going to be like ‘Oh my god. Is that okay? What’d you think [laughs]?’ She originated this groundbreaking character. She’s got to be a little bit like, ‘Don’t do that [laughs]!’”

News of Brown’s return took the soap world by storm when a post appeared on the actress’s official web site (sarahbrown.net). GH confirmed it shortly afterward with an official statement, noting, “Without going into more detail, we will only say that it is confirmed that Sarah Brown will return to GENERAL HOSPITAL sometime in early 2008. More details to come.” Speculation is that her character name is Angela Zacchara, Johnny’s sister, who may have a past with Ric.

The news of Brown’s hire was not a shock to Wright “The [producers] called me quite a few months ago when the idea first came up and they wanted me to know, “We love you. Your job is safe. We’re bringing Sarah Brown back as someone else. This is a whole other character,’” explains Wright. “I wasn’t sure if it was even still happening because I hadn’t heard anything since.”

Wright asserts that she’s looking forward to working with her predecessor. “She freakin’ rocks,” Wright declares, “I know a lot of people who Sarah worked with on AS THE WORLD TURNS [as ex-Julia in 2004-2005] and they just have nothing but rave reviews. Playing against someone that strong as an actress? God help me rise to the occasion.”
