sod-02-08Sonny’s proposal to Kate in Bensonhurst was supposed to be a moment they’d remember for the rest of their lives. It was, but for all the wrong reasons. A stunned Kate ran off and a devastated Sonny went on a rampage, burning down the restaurant where the exchange took place. This week begins with Kate returning to Port Charles to seek out Sonny.

So what’s a poor, broken-hearted lug to do? “He goes out and gets drunk,” grins Bernard…. “He meets this chick She’s good-looking. He doesn’t know who she is….”

The “good-looking chick” is one Claudia Zacchara, who, unbeknownst to Sonny, is a member of the rival Zacchara mob family. Viewers, however, know her as Sarah Brown, the three-time Emmy winner who originated the role of Carly, and played it from 1996-2001.

“Claudia has come to see her ailing father, probably for the last time, but she has other agendas,” previews Brown. “She is having cocktails in a hotel bar when Sonny comes wandering in. He’s in a dark, foul mood, which suits her past perfectly, and the next thing you know, they’re in a hotel room without exchanging names and numbers. And no, she is not aware of who he really is.”

The chemistry between the strangers is overpowering, as Brown explains, and they fall into bed. “It just crackles,” enthuses Brown. “She knows he’s a man of power. She can feel it across the room. Just being in that league is what attracts her to him because not a lot of men run in that circle.”

After the tryst, Claudia disappears just as suddenly as she appeared. “There’s no way he would have known that he slept with Zacchara’s daughter,” says Bernard. “And he’s not going to feel great about it after the fact. It’s bad business, for one thing [laughs], and it’s really not cool [regarding Kate]. He’s going to have to deal with it and I don’t know how he’ll do that, but I can tell you one thing, it’s going to be one hell of a roller-coaster ride.”

I, Claudia

Sarah Brown explains how and why she returned to her Port Charles roots.

Soap Opera Digest: How in the world did this happen?

Sarah Brown: It’s actually a fun story. With the exception of an Emmy party night before I came to AS THE WORLD TURNS [as Julia, 2004-05], I had not seen any main players I played with, since I left GH. But I kept seeing Kin Shriner, [Scott; ex-Keith, ATWT et al] at the gym because he moved out here [L.A.] to do GH again and somehow, we always work out at the same gym [laughs]. We did it in New York. We ended up doing it here. So I saw him on Monday. On Wednesday, I ran into Maurice [Bernard] at the car wash! We chatted for a while. Then on Saturday, I’m at a local cafe near my house that I go to all the time Jill’s [Farren Phelps, executive producer] there with a friend. I’m like, “What’s going on?” So we talked and caught up, and I said “If there’s ever something little, I’m not asking for a commitment here, but I’d love to come back and play with you guys.” You know how Vanessa [Marcil, ex-Brenda] always toys with it–to come in, do something, and come out. So she called my people almost immediately and said, “Was she serious?” And I’m like, “Totally,” and the next thing you know, the wheels were in motion.

Digest: Why come back now?

Brown: It’s only a year, and it’s going to be a great year. I want to work, I need to work, but I also need to enjoy what I’m doing. After doing a lot of episodic work, I found the opportunity of having to develop a character to be exciting again.

Digest: Who is Claudia?

Brown: She was raised by an uncle who has no sons, to be a woman in a man’s world. She’s got the family behind her. She’s not an assassin. She’s a businesswoman. She’s a sexy, sexual woman as you’ll see [laughs] and she has some secrets and a history that will unfold.

Digest: Is it odd to be back as another character?

Brown: It’s not as surreal as you might think because so much time has passed. After Carly was recast, it was something I needed to let go of. It’s like a boyfriend you try to hold on to seven, eight years later. It’s a lost love. And, also out of respect for another actor, you have to let them go and do what they’re doing with it.

Digest: What kind of initial reaction have you gotten?

Brown: Some are over-joyed. Some are confused, but they’re ultimately posting support. As long as they’re willing to take the ride with me, I’m going to promise I will make it pay off for them.
