Agnes has finally bedded Nick, thanks to Bridget’s fling. Now what?

With wicked Claudia still propelling the story from the grave on “General Hospital,” Sarah Joy Brown has slipped into a new speed at “The Bold and the Beautiful.” Her character Agnes hit the L.A. scene with an intense rape and surrogacy story line that climaxed with her losing Nick and Bridget’s baby. Since that blowup, however, Aggie has been kept on a low boil, pining for Nick and waiting for Bridget to slip up. Neither Claudia nor the vivacious Carly, who earned Brown three Emmys and a devoted fan base in the late ’90s, would approve of Agnes’ patience, but it’s finally paying off!

MSN TV: What was it like to jump into “The Bold and the Beautiful” action while you were still on “General Hospital”?

Sarah Joy Brown: Doing both at the same time was a lot of work, but it was amazing. This is a very well-oiled machine. There are no attitudes floating around, and everyone genuinely likes each other. You’re not coming into a ton of tension, and you don’t have to navigate all these landmines. It was easy to come in, because it wasn’t in chaos. I’ve been on a few shows, so I would know!

What lured you to “B&B”?

Brad Bell ["B&B" head writer and executive producer] made me an offer I couldn’t refuse. He’s wonderful. I have a tremendous amount of respect for him, because the way a show is when you come in is a direct result of how it is at the top. He’s good at running this place.

Agnes is finally getting her shot at Nick. How is she feeling about that?

The eagle has landed! She’s happy. When that story line starts to heat up, it’s great for Agnes. No one’s seen her outside of the realm of the victim and the outsider, so it’s nice she gets to have intimacy with Nick. That afternoon romance is an important part of the daytime genre, and fans love it.

Love is the only way you really get to know a woman. Once she’s in love, just try to mess with me, Bridget! [Laughs.] It’s me playing the role, so Aggie’s going to have whatever backbone I can possibly give her. She’s not going to be a fighter, necessarily, but she’s not going to wimpy-kid out.

Is Nick ready for a new relationship?

That’s what the fun of the story is and something Agnes delves into a bit. Obviously, he’s just coming out of this relationship with his wife. He’s not looking for a girl to settle down with, but neither is Agnes, so it’s perfect. It’s beautiful and healing for her to have this strong, protective male to re-embark into the world of love and romance with, but they’re not rushing off to get married. She gets to dip her toe back in and he gets to take his mind off things. Who knows where it could go, but I’ve gotten to do some fun stuff with Jack [Wagner (Nick)] so far.

How will Aggie play this “win” with Bridget?

There’s a fine line to walk, professionally.

Aggie works in that building, where everyone is related to each other and she is an outsider. Her boss is her lover’s ex-wife and her ex-friend. It’s complicated. She can’t get too out of line, but as this progresses, it’s fun to see her get spirited and protective. Now that she and Nick are lovers, she is going to have territorial feelings, and so does Bridget, obviously. It’s a hormone fest! Bridget is still in love with her husband and probably holding onto hope that they can make things work. She probably also wants to win, on some level, and so does Aggie.

What is it like facing off against Ashley Jones [Bridget]?

I love her. She’s sweet, cute, talented and sexy and always wears the cutest little outfits. I’ve had so much fun working with her. She’s made everything easy and awesome, and she’s also super funny. So is Adrienne Frantz [Amber], who got thrown in there at Jackie M, as well. A lot of good ladies to work with!

Is it odd to play Agnes Jones across from someone named Ashley Jones?

It’s cute. It’s weird, but Brad does that on purpose. He loves Ashley, so he says, “Let’s make the Joneses.” Me, Rick [Hearst] and Zack [Conroy] joke about “keeping up with the Joneses,” so we love the last name.

It’s no secret the fans go nuts for you. Does that put pressure on you?

They’re sweet. I love them. Soap fans can be hardcore. Of course you feel the pressure to live up to people’s expectations in a genre where you have less and less time. It’s harder to do it, especially after you take a huge break. This is a little more my speed. “B&B” is only half an hour, and even though we shoot two shows a day, I don’t do as many scenes. I’m OK with that. I can have a life and other work.

Speaking of work, you did a fun guest spot on “Castle” this year. Got anything else coming down the pike?

I have four weeks for hiatus, so hopefully I’ll be able to come up with another job in that time. It will be fun to do some auditions. It’s my first year at “B&B,” so I’ve been adjusting to all the free time and balancing what to do with it.

When you’re not conniving or wooing on screen, what do you do for fun?

I just had my family in town for two weeks, and they’re coming back, so I’ll also spend time with my daughter and all my nieces and nephews doing fun stuff around town. I also have tons of hobbies. It’s important to be a little rounded and keep interests in other things. I’m into music. I play piano, guitar and drums, but it’s not anything I would take on the road. I love to dance, snowboard, edit and work on directing. I keep it busy!

I can’t let you go without getting your take on Vanessa Marcil‘s return to “General Hospital.”

It’s awesome. I’m going to have to watch Brenda and Sonny now! It’s kind of mind-blowing. She was working with Maurice [Benard (Sonny)] before I was. It was Sonny and Brenda before Sonny and Carly. It will be interesting to see where they take her, and I think it’s awesome she can work in primetime and then return to daytime. The more of that the better.

Outstanding Lead Actor/Actress: The Young and the Restless‘ Peter Bergman (Jack) and Michelle Stafford (Phyllis). Each submitted episodes where their characters dealt with the fallout from Sharon’s torrid sex spree, and each faces seismic Emmy opponents. He’s up against As the World Turns‘ Michael Park (Jack), while she has big competition from ATWT‘s Maura West (Carly) and GH‘s Sarah Joy Brown (Claudia). Yep, I’m leaving out Crystal Chappell, though she arguably gave the performance of the year as Guiding Light‘s Olivia. Her chosen material — Olivia’s declaration of love to Natalia — oddly seemed pale compared to the work of the others and executive producer Ellen Wheeler’s cheap, ghastly production values didn’t help. But let’s get back to Bergman and Stafford. Prior to re-viewing their reels, I wouldn’t have thought either had much chance to win, since both their characters were trashed by the current producing/writing regime. But, when it comes to nabbing an Emmy, it only takes one hotter-than-hell episode. And this duo delivered! There is a heft and a magnificence to their performances that leaves you breathless.

Will she set a Daytime Emmy record? Sarah Joy Brown is a frontrunner in the lead actress race for her role as crazy-ass mob moll — and axe victim — Claudia Zacchara on General Hospital. She already has three Emmys as GH‘s original Carly, one in supporting, two as younger actress. If she wins again on June 27 (9/8c, CBS), she’ll be the first to score a statue in all three performance categories. The bodacious Brown is already laying the groundwork for a 2011 nod for her current role as lovelorn Agnes Jones on The Bold and the Beautiful. Expect things to amp up June 17 when Aggie, who carries a secret torch for Nick (Jack Wagner), definitively learns what she’s been suspecting for weeks — that Nick’s wife Bridget (Ashley Jones) is pregnant by her loverboy Owen (Brandon Beemer). And, just one episode later, Aggie blabs the news to Nick! TV Guide Magazine spoke with Brown about the fine art of hell-raising.

TV Guide Magazine: Just a handful of soap stars have been nominated in all three acting categories — Michael E. Knight, Debbi Morgan, Beth Ehlers, Roger Howarth, Steve Burton and you — but you have the best shot yet at winning the triple crown. How’s it feel?
Brown: I love it! I’m so grateful to be nominated, but who doesn’t want to win? It’s been nine years since my last one.

TV Guide Magazine: And if you don’t take home the gold?
Brown: I’ll be contacting people to break some kneecaps.

TV Guide Magazine: Spoken like a true Zacchara!
Brown: [Laughs] I still have my connections in Port Charles.

TV Guide Magazine: Don’t you love it that Claudia is still stirring up a fuss even though she’s been dead half a year?
Brown: I’m kind of honored! Who knew a baseball bat to the head would be so dramatic?

TV Guide Magazine: Well, actually, it was an axe handle…
Brown: Now, the real honor would be if they brought in another Claudia. Then I will have originated two different characters on GH that were recast.

TV Guide Magazine: Uh, do you know something we don’t? Is Claudia secretly alive on a tropical island somewhere?
Brown: Hey, it’s GH. You never know.

TV Guide Magazine: Given your three Emmys and star status, were you surprised GH decided to kill off Claudia?
Brown: I think the character had gone a little too far. And maybe they felt she wasn’t redeemable. I’m just making this up as I go along because I really don’t know their motivation in letting me go because I still had quite a lot of time left on my contract. This question has me on a slippery slope…

TV Guide Magazine: How did it feel to play such a pariah? Nobody liked Claudia. Even her father [crime lord Anthony Zacchara played by Bruce Weitz] hated her guts, and told her so.
Brown: At least her brother Johnny [Brandon Barash] liked her but even he got to the point where he was calling her a crazy bitch. Claudia definitely deserved the hell that rained down upon her. Sure, I worried about playing a pariah — I worried about the audience and I worried even more about Claudia. I didn’t know where all her motivations and deep psychosis were coming from. I wasn’t prepared for it to get into the realm of hurting children. And I know the audience doesn’t like that! You gotta care about your character, even when she does some pretty horrific things. After a while, I wasn’t sure who she was, and that made it difficult on a daily basis. And things move so quickly on the soaps these days that there was no time to talk to the writers and producers when something would come up. You just get in there and do it, and do it the best you can. Still, it was a good year and a half and I’m grateful for the opportunity. It brought me back to daytime.

TV Guide Magazine: And after you got the axe — literally and figuratively — you walked right into a role at B&B! Let’s discuss. Aggie is obsessed with Nick. Is this headed toward some fatal attraction type thing?
Brown: Oh, God no! In fact, when you say “obsessed” I cringe. I don’t think Agnes is crazy and I don’t think she’s obsessed with Nick on any level.

TV Guide Magazine: Really? What show are you watching?
Brown: I think she has a really healthy attraction to him. Of course, he is a married man so I guess it’s not that healthy but it’s human. She has been through a huge ordeal and this man stepped up and cared for her. She has respect for Nick, and I think Agnes would have let bygones be bygones if she had not found out about Bridget and Owen. It’s not really an obsession as much as a deep love for someone she appreciates. She doesn’t feel Bridget is good enough for Nick. Otherwise, I don’t think Agnes would be making a play for him. [Suddenly realizes she just gave away a big plot point]. Which…uh…[coughs nervously]…she may or may not do in the future…

TV Guide Magazine: Can we at least agree that Agnes Jones is the worst name ever for a soap character? She sounds like she should be out on the prairie milking something.
Brown: Hey, I find playing a character with that name a challenge! Besides, it was worse when Aggie started on B&B and was calling herself Sandy Summers. It turns out there’s a porn star with that name.

TV Guide Magazine: Seriously?
Brown: Google “Sandy Summers” and she’s the first thing that pops up. It was a nightmare!

TV Guide Magazine: Let’s get back to the Emmys. Will you be sitting with the people at GH who fired you, or your new pals at B&B?
Brown: Oh, B&B definitely. But it’s going to be weird because both shows are competing for best soap. If GH wins, am I a part of that? I don’t know! [Laughs] I have nothing but love for my peeps at GH, so I guess I can’t lose no matter which wins best show. Unless somebody else wins. In that case, I’ll need to take care of a few more kneecaps. Hey, it’s Vegas! We’re all gonna get crazy!
